EVE 2016

MECHANICAL PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The EVE project corresponds to a range of binoculars and wired augmented reality spectacles intended for use in industrial environments. In sep. 2015, I was hired by the SME Laster Technology to work on the upcoming version of the glasses. The project consisted in the full design of the 2016 version from concepts to 3D printed functional prototypes.

This project introduced me to mechanical design in a company's environment through the topic of Augmented Reality. It taught me how persistent and proactive one needs to be in order to manage such a project. Ultimately, it highlighted to questions: Apart from the technical requirements, what are the guidelines that should lead such glasses to a design or another ? And how those glasses interfere in their users' perceptions ? Is there a judicious, considered way to "consume" Augmented Reality ?

Those two "why-questions" led me to the field of Industrial Design Engineering, a field where the "Why" is a core value.

MECHANICAL INTEGRATION

PROCESS

As a mechanical designer, the first goal was to deeply understand the functioning of a digital product like AR glasses, from it's optical functioning, to the connections between each circuits and the precision needed to achieve a proper display. Then I worked in collaboration with technical departments to encapsulate each components into the device. All this project was realised using SolidWorks.
